Cast(e) in India

This project uncovers the hidden intersections of caste, labor, and urban infrastructure—viewed through something as overlooked as a manhole cover in New York City. Many of these covers are manufactured in India by Dalit laborers working under exploitative conditions, their contributions erased beneath our feet.

By relocating these industrial objects from functional obscurity to artistic reflection, Cast(e) in India challenges viewers to confront how caste-based oppression transcends borders, embedding itself in the very structures of modern life. This work turns public space into a site of inquiry—where invisible labor becomes visible, and systems of inequality are laid bare.
