Traveling with Oil Paints

Updated: Mar 10, 2023

I’ve been traveling a lot lately, but nothing stopped me from painting with oil paints. I used to think carrying oil paints with me everywhere is impossible, even if I did I thought it will be messy. But fortunately, I bought Artisan water mixable oil paints, and I have to say my painting process has been made so much simpler yet retains the quality of my output. The difference between artisan water mixable oil paints and traditional oil paints is that Artisan water mixable oil paint is chemically modified to be thinned and cleaned with water, although this range contains linseed oil. They are a great choice for artists with sensitivity to solvents and for those working in shared spaces. With Artisan water-mixable oil paints, the paints are thinned with water only.

Pros of using Artisan WM oil paints

  • All you will need is water. Water opens up the paint and extends the color, making techniques like blending smoother than ever.

  • The flow of paint increases with the water

  • Can be used with traditional oil paint mediums like Sansodor, Liquin, etc.,

  • Can be mixed with traditional oil paints too

  • Great for travelers and for people who dislike the smell of solvents

  • Faster drying time yet retains buttery consistency like traditional oil paints.

Cons of using Artisan WM oil paints

  • If you add too much water, then it breaks down the paint. Just like in the case of traditional oil paints, where too much turpentine can wreck/wash the paint.

  • Might lack shine, but you will need to varnish the painting finally. However, this happens even with traditional oil paintings too.
